The industry favorite Nigerian singer Wizkid is known for his influence in the modern Afrobeats scene, he's become acclaimed as one of the biggest and most influential artists to exist. Following the release of his fifth studio record "More Love, Less Ego" and an astounding sold-out Madison Square Garden show, Wizkid is kicking off the More Love, Less Ego tour in March of 2023. He's scheduled to hop around 20 cities next spring, set to perform live renditions of his new songs, and his biggest hits.
The Grammy Award-winning singer though having gained prominence in 2016 after his collaboration with Drake's global hit single "One Dance", Wizkid's passion for music stems back to when he was 11. He used to be part of a group named the Glorious Five, formed with some church friends. Until 2006, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun went by the stage name of Lil Prinz, before taking the identity as Wizkid.
In 2010, he released his debut album "Superstar" featuring his singles "Holla at Your Boy", "Tease Me/Bad Guys", and "Don't Dull". He started gaining attention with his first single being nominated for Best Pop Single and gained him a Next Rated award at The Headies 2011. Wizkid introduced his signature elements of Afrobeats, R&B, dancehall, and reggae through his debut.
In 2016, the man was Nigeria's first artist to appear on Billboard's Twitter Last 24 hours chart for his feature on Drake's global hit single "One Dance". The track hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking it his first #1 as a featured artist, allowing him to be exposed to the global stage. Following the successful feature, he signed a record deal with RCA in early 2017.
He released his third album "Sounds from the Other Side" in July of 2017, with guest appearances from the likes of Drake, Chris Brown, Ty Dolla Sign, Major Lazer, and more. The record features his hit single "Come Closer" featuring Drake, and other crowd-favorites such as "Daddy Yo" featuring Efya, and "African Bad Gyal" featuring Chris Brown.
From then on, Wizkid has become a prominent name in the Afrobeats music scene. Acclaimed for his dedication, artistry, and influence, Wizkid has made rounds as a pride of Nigeria. Among his recognitions are Grammy Awards and nominations, becoming the most awarded African artist for his Billboard Awards, iHeartRadio Music Awards, and MOBO Awards, Guinness World Records for having the first song to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify, and becoming the most streamed song on the platform. He's also named one of the Top 100 most influential Africans by New African Magazine.
In November of 2021, his hit single "Essence" and his album "Made in Lagos" earned him two nominations at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
With a new album "More Love, Less Ego" up his sleeves, the Nigerian singer is set to embark on bigger adventures driven by love as he performs around several cities on his 2023 North American tour this spring.
